THE COUNTY SEAT
MARSHALL, NORTH CAROLINA

WELCOMES YOU
James Briggs
Driving into town I stopped at a well kept area
at a curve along the roadside.  As I enjoyed the
scenery of the stream and the beautiful
surroundings, I took several pictures.  The area
was straight out of a scenic photo album
anyway, so I just pointed my phone and shot
away.  Walking alongside the stream, I noticed
an elderly gentleman had pulled up and was
watching me.  I climbed the steep bank almost
slipping an falling and came up beside the man.
We began to talk.
He told me this was his land and he was so
proud of being able to keep it looking so nice.
And that it was!!... A beautiful bend in the
stream with a nice flat area along the road, a
walkway and a sandy area by the stream.  He
told me how he welcomed all to enjoy this little
corner of paradise.  How churches often came
and had baptisms in the stream.  And, when he
was a child, how his family raised sugar cane
above the road and made molasses in the fall.
I looked up at the area he was talking about and
remembered how we all farmed the steep rocky
land barely scraping out a living.  We talked of
growing up... working in the fields and putting
away food for winter.....  Of selling our meager
production to buy the very essentials.... of
being so careful not to waste anything... for we
might have to "do without" and that meant...
without food.
In the end we both agreed that we were indeed
lucky to grow up in Madison County and would
not trade that experience for any man's gold.

Mr. Briggs allowed me to take his picture as he
stood by the stream.  I told him that I looked
forward to seeing him in the years to come.  He
told me, next time to wear warmer clothes!  It
was blowing snow and I was wearing short
pants and a short sleeve shirt.
